The precise and punchy Detonate sets the tone for ten songs of savage soundscapes and impressive technicality from London based Melodic Death Metal outfit GraViL. No More Forgiveness marks the bands second full length release, and is the soundtrack of a band laying down their blueprints in the world of heavy music.
Although the presence of technicality and gruelling break need speed riffing is a common theme throughout this album, it is cleverly but merged with plenty of melodic flares and ‘stick in the head’ choruses. I Am the Blood for instance, is a clear example of this in full affect, this track and more broadly the album as a whole has a certain charm to it, which would most certainly make No More Forgiveness easy to palette for a listener with a more commercial ear, meaning this could appeal to someone who is into Bullet for My Valentine as much as it would a DevilDriver fan.
It would not be unfair to say that this album is at its best when it goes full throttle, the couple of slower numbers that we see don’t really match up to the likes of Choke in Silence and one of the stand out moments on the entire record, Locate the Traitor. The latter featuring clever little twists and turns and frequent flairs of synthesized layers, which really make the track stand out from the rest. Decommissioned is an obvious choice for the first single to be released. It offers a three minute and fifty second taster of what this band is all about, the track goes in hard from the get to and features the most ‘pissed off’ vocal delivery and lyrical themes on the entire album.
Although No More Forgiveness is a strong set of songs, I feel the best is yet to come from GraViL, but for the most part the record is a firm statement of intent from a band who are more than worthy of your time.
